On March 2, 2021, a significant academic collaboration was established between Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) and Quantum Technology Foundation (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (QTFT). The agreement was signed by Associate Professor Dr. Weerapong Paesuwan, President of SUT, and Associate Professor Dr. Vorawat Miwatsana, Dean of the Faculty of Science, along with Dr. Jirawat Tangpanitnan, Executive Chairman of QTFT, and Dr. Areeya Jantasri, Co-Founder of the company. This partnership aims to advance research and development in quantum technology and to develop human resources in advanced physics, focusing on creating innovative commercial applications.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Weerapong emphasized the rapid advancements in quantum technology, which are leading to significant developments in quantum computers by major companies such as Google and IBM. He noted the necessity for Thailand to prepare for the impending impact of these technologies, stating that this collaboration will serve as a Consortium Platform essential for fostering knowledge, research, and innovation in quantum technology. The ultimate goal is to develop a skilled workforce ready to embrace the future of quantum technology in Thailand.
Dr. Vorawat Miwatsana, who heads the research project, highlighted SUT's strong research capabilities in physics, as the university ranks first in Physical Science in Thailand according to Times Higher Education World Ranking. He elaborated on the ambitious project that aims to establish an integrated ecosystem for national quantum technology research, collaborating with eight institutions across the country to advance quantum research. This partnership has already achieved notable success, such as developing Quantum Bits (Qubits) from diamonds, a groundbreaking accomplishment in Thailand.
Dr. Jirawat Tangpanitnan noted that quantum technology represents the next era following digital technology and is crucial for developing secure digital systems. He underlined the importance of this cooperation in harnessing the expertise of nearly 100 qualified professionals in Thailand to drive innovations that will enhance the country’s industrial capabilities.
This partnership between SUT and QTFT marks a pivotal step in establishing a robust framework for quantum research and development in Thailand. By leveraging the collective expertise of academic scholars and industry professionals, both organizations are poised to lead the way in integrating quantum technology into various sectors, ensuring that Thailand remains at the forefront of this revolutionary field.
